Copper Foiled Butterfly Card

The crafting world has gone mad for foiling, but what happens when you aren’t satisfied with the results you get with a cheap laminator and also don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for a Minc?  (For the record, I have both the cheap laminator and the Minc and use them frequently. 🙂 )  Crafter’s Companion introduced foil transfer sheets during the last 24-hour Craft Day on HSN, and after having a chance to try them out, I’m so excited about all of the new foiling possibilities!

The foil transfer sheets are basically rub-ons of adhesive shaped like a design or sentiment.  You get a stack of 6″ x 6″ sheets in the kit (2 of each design) and you can trim out whatever image you’d like with scissors to apply it to cardstock, vellum, or even ceramic.  Above, I’ve rubbed a butterfly onto navy blue cardstock with my teflon bone folder and peeled the transfer sheet off.

Then, just like you would do with double-sided adhesive (as I’ve done here with adhesive cut on my Silhouette), you lay the foil sheet on top and press well with a popsicle stick or bone folder.  Remove the foil sheet and if you have any spots where the foil hasn’t transferred, just press it back on top of the adhesive until you have full coverage.  Any stray specks of foil can be brushed away easily (I use a soft makeup brush for this as well as stray glitter).

For this card, I started by cutting a card base using the “Nicole” Create-A-Card die.  This type of die is thicker and only cuts around three sides, so you can fold your cardstock in half, line the folded edge up with the non-cutting edge of the die, and create a card base in one pass on your die-cutting machine.

Once cut, I foiled the entire background with a full sheet patterned rub-on and added copper foil on top.  The butterflies were foiled onto cream cardstock, lightly colored with pink and blue Distress ink and a sponge dauber, and then carefully fussy-cut out.

And how nice is it to finally have an easy way to add foiled sentiments?  Here I die-cut a coordinating scalloped square with a smaller die in the “Nicole” set by flipping the die 180 degrees after the first pass and running it through a second time.  Then, I added one of the tons of gorgeous foil-able sentiments from the kit.

The Create-A-Card Base dies and foil transfer kits will be presented live on HSN tomorrow during the 9am and 3pm shows (EST, and there are additional shows at 10am and 4pm as well) if you’re interested in seeing more.  Thanks so much for stopping by today!

This is so soft and pretty. I have some of the new foils but I haven’t had a chance to try it yet. I think you have inspired me.

Thank you so much Linda! I love the foils and actually bought some more last week…you’re going to have so much fun with them!

I have a question. I hope you know the answer. Can you use the rub on more than once or is used once and discarded?

Hi Kim! They are a one-time use item…but you do get at least two of each design in the packs I bought. And you can always use the printed backer sheets for shaker cards or clear overlays too (and you can color them with alcohol markers).
