Hosting a party this summer and looking for a quick and easy way to dress up your drinks?  These fun handmade drink umbrellas can be customized to fit the theme of any party or backyard barbeque.  Combine them with the beautiful metallic finish of the Bright Foil Cardstocks from CutCardStock for a super trendy look!

DIY Drink Umbrellas by Annie Williams - Die-cutting
There are a couple of different ways to create mini umbrellas, but I wanted to show off the gorgeous reflective surface of the Bright Foil Cardstock, so I chose a pleated design.  Start by die-cutting some silver and gold foil cardstock with almost any circular die with a diameter of about 3-4 inches.  Intricate doily shapes can create a more sophisticated look while a simple scalloped shape works perfectly for more informal get-togethers.

If the die has a scalloped edge like this one (Spellbinders “Heart Circles”), be sure that it contains an even number of scallops otherwise your pleating will be uneven.  If you would like to create umbrellas with a “wind vent look” like I did (it reminds me of the beach!), then choose a set of dies that contains a smaller (about 1 inch) coordinating circle die.

With the reflective surface of the foil die-cut facing up, score a line straight through the middle of the circle (cut the circle in half) between every other set of scallops (or hearts in this case).

Turn the foil die-cut over and score a line straight through the middle of the circle between the sets of remaining scallops (hearts).  Repeat this process with the smaller die-cut.  Using a paper piercer, poke a hole in the very center of the large die-cut where all of the score lines meet.

Crease the die-cut on its score lines, ensuring that the “bump” made while scoring remains on the inside of each fold.  For example, any score lines created while the reflective side of the foil die-cut faced up on the score board will be creased now so that the white side of the cardstock is inside of the fold.  Since the Bright Foil cardstock is fairly thick, this scoring process prevents it from cracking.

Insert the sharp end of a bamboo skewer through the pierced hole until it sticks out about a quarter-inch and glue into place with a hot glue gun.  I’m using 8 inch skewers here, but you can trim longer skewers down to the correct size if needed.

Embellish the top of the “wind vent layer” with a small pearl or gem if desired.
