Spellbinders Small Die of the Month – July 2020

July Club Kits are here and I think you’ll agree that Spellbinders has hit it out of the park again!  This month’s Small Die of the Month Kit, Ornamental Floral Card Creator, contains four dies that cut beautiful dainty flowers as well as a gorgeous intricate half-frame.  I used it in two different ways to create this set of pretty friendship cards.

There are many different ways to use intricate floral outline dies like these, and for this card I wanted to leave the outline white and piece the cut-outs back in after I had colored them.  This technique would also work great with a black, gold, or silver outline!

I ran the dies through my diecutting machine in such a way that I knew I wouldn’t get a complete cut…leaving a clear border around the image that I could see, but allowing the die-cuts to remain in my sheet of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock.  This makes it easier for me to color in those itty bitty pieces with my Copic markers.  I wasn’t too careful with staying inside the lines, because I knew I would be cutting a fresh white outline to piece the flowers back together in.  Once I was done coloring, I just nestled the die back into the paper where it had been before and ran it through my diecutting machine one more time to complete the cut.

To create the background panel, I cut a piece of aqua cardstock with the two largest dies from the Essential Rectangles Die set.  I love how these dies can finish a background off in a clean and simple way!  Then I stamped a beautiful sentiment from this month’s Card Kit of the Month in Versamark ink, added white embossing powder, and melted it with a heat tool.

For the next card, I thought I would experiment with the opposite effect and color the outline of the flowers while leaving the interiors blank.  I started by cutting each of the flowers out of watercolor paper and quickly coloring them with Spectrum Noir Sparkle Markers.

To help these delicate flower die-cuts stand out a bit more against my background, I glued each one to a piece of Translucent Iridescent Pearl Cardstock (a thick vellum-like pearlescent cardstock) with liquid glue.  Then I fussy-cut around the images with detail scissors, leaving a bit of a border.

After creating a top-folding A2-sized white card base, I stamped a nice sentiment from the Panda Thank You stamp set in Mardi Gras ink.  To add a little depth, I blended Salty Ocean Distress Ink around the edges with a blending brush.

Two of the half-frame die-cuts from the kit fit perfectly on an A2-sized card with a bit of overlap in the middle, so I adhered those in place with a little liquid glue.  To finish the card off, I popped the flower clusters up in the corners using a little clear foam tape.

I hope you enjoyed this look at the July 2020 Small Die of the Month kit and thanks so much for stopping by today.  I’ll be back with inspiration for some of the other July club kits very soon!

    Annie,
Love your cards and your style! I am a retired scientist who loves papercrafting, and in particular card making! I am very pleased to know there is another scientist out there who also enjoys creating and sharing beautiful cards! Count me in as a new follower! I am curious about your field of study… I worked in microbiology, virology, immunology and allergy…

Thank you so much Gera! I worked in a little bit of everything too (before I had two kids and decided to take a little break)…mostly molecular biology though. It’s great to meet another scientist who likes cardmaking!
