Some occasions call for bold fonts and bright colors…and if I’m going to congratulate a friend, I’m going to do it in a big way. The new Modern Essentials Collection from Spellbinders is full of delicate basic shape foil plates and dies that can be paired together to create gorgeous backdrops or used separately for simple borders and mat layers. Or add one of the eye-catching sentiments from the Bold Type Sentiments Collection to create even more striking cards in a variety of styles. I chose a simpler design today, coupled with vivid colors, to create this fun rainbow congrats card perfect for the upcoming graduation season.
FOILED BACKGROUND IMAGE
- Trim a piece of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock to 4.25″ x 4.25″.
- Place the largest Essential Circles Foil Plate on your Glimmer Hot Foiling System and allow to heat up. Add a piece of Crimson Stars Hot Foil and the white cardstock and run through your die-cutting machine.
- Repeat this step with each remaining Essential Circle Foil Plate, largest to smallest, positioning the plate towards the upper right corner of the previous foiled design as shown. Here I’ve created a rainbow pattern using Tangerine, Gold, Green, Cobalt Blue, Fuchsia Flower, and Magenta Hot Foils with progressively smaller circle foil plates each time.
(Tip: Washi tape can be a lifesaver when creating multi-colored foiled designs like this. Simply tape the foil plate in the correct position to your cardstock, slide your foil underneath the secured plate, and add the whole stack to your Glimmer Platform to heat.)
RAINBOW BACKGROUND AND SENTIMENT
- Trim a piece of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White to 4.75″ x 4.75″.
- Blend Festive Berries, Carved Pumpkin, Squeezed Lemonade, Mowed Lawn, Blueprint Sketch, and Wilted Violet Distress Inks over the entire panel with a foam blending tool to create a smooth rainbow blend.
- Die cut the center of the panel with the solid Bold Type Congrats die, ensuring that a 1/4″ border around the edge remains intact so that the panel can be used as a mat for the foiled design. (Here I also cut the background panel with the striped Bold Type Congrats die because I wasn’t sure which one I would use in the final card design, but this step is unnecessary.)
- Die cut gold foil and black cardstock with the striped Bold Type Congrats die.
FOILED SENTIMENT
- Apply gold foil to black cardstock using the latter part of the Hello Dear Friend Glimmer Foil Plate set and the Glimmer Hot Foil System.
- Die cut into a flag shape using the strip die from the Everyday Sentiments Foil Plates set (or trim out with scissors).
CARD ASSEMBLY
- Create a top-folding 5.25″ x 5.25″ card base out of white cardstock.
- Trim a piece of black cardstock to 5″x 5″ and gold foil cardstock to 4.875″ x 4.875″.
- Mat the foiled white panel with the rainbow blended panel, gold panel, and black panel using tape runner. (I wanted to mimic the look of the repeated circle foil design with these multiple square mats.) Adhere the matted panels to the card base with tape runner.
- Adhere the rainbow Congrats sentiment to the gold striped and black striped sentiment using liquid glue, offsetting each layer for a very bold look. Adhere to the card front using foam strips.
- Pop the sentiment flag up in the lower right corner of the card using foam adhesive.
I love the all of the striking contrast in this card…between the delicate dot pattern paired with the bold sentiment and the bright colors matted with black and white panels, this is definitely a fun way to congratulate a friend.
