Been doing a little traveling so far this summer? Today I’m sharing a tutorial to make this fun travel game board using one of the Printer Tray Frames and an acrylic sheet. Whether you’re stuck in the car with young ones for a long ride or even camping in the great outdoors, this game board can be customized in a ton of different ways and might be a fun reason to put the phones and tablets away for a little while.
Start by painting one of the chipboard dividers in the Square Printer Tray Frame kit in the color of your choice. Here I’ve chosen a sunny yellow acrylic paint that matches the summery scrapbook paper I’ll be using on the rest of the board.
Next, cover the chip back with paper…or for a fun twist, try using photographs to really customize your board! You can adhere one sheet of 12×12 scrapbook paper for a quick and simple background, or do as I did here and adhere several small squares of coordinating papers (Bo Bunny Summer Mood Collection).
Adhere the dividers on top of the chip back using strong liquid adhesive like Beacon 3 -in-1 Adhesive. Set aside to dry fully, then paint the outer edges with the same acrylic paint as the top divider to finish the board off nicely.
To create the game pieces, start by trimming a 12×12 acrylic sheet into 3 3/8 inch squares. You will need at least five game pieces for each player (X’s and O’s), so an extra acrylic sheet will be needed in addition to the one included in the Square Printer Tray Frame kit. Round the corners of each game piece with a corner rounder tool (this allows for easy removal of game pieces and also makes the pieces safer for young children).
Die cut at least five X’s and five O’s from white cardstock (this shows up well on busy backgrounds like mine). Alternatively, choose two different shapes that match the theme of your game board.
Adhere the letters in the center of each acrylic game piece using Beacon 3-in-1 Adhesive and allow to dry. Since the game pieces are clear, you won’t cover up any of the fun customization on the game board while playing.
Now you’re ready to play on the go! The game pieces are sized so that they fit snugly in the board and won’t fall out, but are still easy to remove when a new game starts thanks to the rounded corners. Since the walls of the dividers are much taller than the pieces, they also won’t accidentally fall out on a bumpy car ride!
