Have you ever made a slimline card…one that fits into a business-sized envelope? Before today I hadn’t, but I thought I’d share a tutorial to make this fun slimline card using one of the newest chipboard embellishments from the Clear Scraps shop. As soon as I saw this cute train shape, I knew I wanted to place it into an alpine scene for a unique bon voyage card.
Start by trimming the train chipboard embellishment out of its frame and applying color. One of my favorite ways to finish chipboard embellishments is to coat the piece in Versamark ink (by just pressing the pad all over the shape) and add different colors of embossing powder. Here I’ve used black embossing powder for the engine and burgundy (discontinued powder from my stash, but a similar shade can be found here) and black embossing powders for the cars. Applying several coats of powder (melting in between with a heat tool) leaves the perfect enamel finish on the shape.
For a little embellishment, I trimmed very thin strips of gold adhesive vinyl and used them as pinstripes on the engine and cars. The tiny number seven on the engine was made with the same gold strip, trimmed out neatly with detail scissors.
To create the background, I first cut a panel of white cardstock to 3.75″ x 9″. After stamping mountaintops at the very top of the panel with the Color Layering Mountains at the Lake stamp set and diecutting the edge out, I stenciled pine trees on the lower part of the panel using the Pine Trees stencil and a couple shades of green ink (Green Hills and Forever Green). Alternating the height, color, and order of the tree shapes across the card gives a more natural look to the background.
I popped the background scene up on top of a panel of white cardstock that I blended Tumbled Glass and Salty Ocean Distress inks over to create the sky, then matted it with black cardstock before adhering it all down to a top-folding slimline cardbase (4″ x 9.25″). Add a grey strip of cardstock and train tracks (I used a thin striped border die to create mine from black cardstock) to the bottom of the panel before popping the chipboard train up top with foam adhesive. Finish the card off with a stamped or die cut sentiment (Simon Says Stamp).
