My kids are still very young, but they already love birthdays. I thought it would be fun to have a little birthday sign to hang on their door when it was their special day, so today I’m sharing a quick tutorial to make this easy cupcake hanger using one of the medium pallet shapes from Clear Scraps.
I started by painting the entire Cupcake Medium DIY Pallet Shape white with satin finish acrylic paint. Before I add my first coat of paint to wooden shapes like these, I usually give the whole piece a quick sanding with a fine grit sanding sponge. I repeat this sanding step after the first coat of paint, and then add a second coat. This gives it a really nice smooth finish for adding hand-painted touches later.
Once dry, I painted a light teal cupcake wrapper and light pink fluffy mounds of frosting on the shape by hand using acrylic paint. I kept the strokes fast and loose for a whimsical look and blended any harsh edges out with a little white paint. Pink and blue were used together on this project so that I can pull this sign out for both my son’s and my daughter’s birthday.
I finished the sign off by adhering a “happy birthday” sentiment die cut from some silver glitter cardstock and adding a quick white organza bow around the cupcake wrapper. You can then attach the sign to a dowel or stake to post in the ground outdoors, or add a hanger with natural jute like I’ve done here.
