Spellbinders Large Die of the Month – November 2020

Like most years, the weather turned cold in my neck of the woods as soon as Halloween arrived this past weekend.  As I sit here and type this post, 35mph wind gusts are blowing the last of the pretty autumn leaves off of our trees.  It’s definitely sweater weather, and when I saw this month’s Large Die of the Month Kit from Spellbinders, Merry Stitching, I loved how perfect it was for creating warm and snuggly Christmas and winter cards.

The Merry Stitching die set contains 6 dies – three dies both cut an intricate pierced pattern and emboss stitching guidelines into your cardstock, while the other three cut the edge of the design out.  You can use them in tons of ways because of this!  For this card, I used the inner stitching and outer edge dies to cut three Christmas trees out of Pink, Lavender, and Aqua Shimmer Cardstock, then I stitched all of them with white embroidery thread.  Don’t worry…if you’ve never stitched like this before, templates are included to help you figure out where to put your needle!  (I have only done stitching like this a couple of times before and I found it to be fun and easy!)

Because the stitching is such an unexpected, eye-catching element, I wanted to keep the rest of my card pretty simple.  I foiled a sentiment from the Shimmering Merry Sentiments Foil Plate Set onto white cardstock measuring 5.25″ x 4″ using Moondust Hot Foil and my Glimmer Hot Foil Machine.  Once adhered to a top-folding A2-sized white card base with foam adhesive, I simply popped my stitched trees up on top.

The other two designs in the Merry Stitching kit are actually quite versatile.  This stitched border design could really be used for any type of card because there’s nothing particularly Christmas-y about it unless you stitch it in shades of red and green like I did.  I also used the inner and outer dies to cut the design twice on white cardstock, forming a shaped card front instead of just a decorative edge.

Once I had stitched the whole design on both sides, I cut a piece of gold satin cardstock using just the outer edge die and layered the white panel on top with tape runner.  This allows a bit of gold to shine through some of the decorative die cut designs in the panel.

Once adhered to a card base with foam adhesive, I chose only to add a sentiment to my stitched panel.  After cutting the Merry Christmas greeting from the Snowflake Splendor die set in both gold satin and green cardstock, I layered them up to form a shadow and adhere them to the card front with liquid glue.

And who says you even need to add stitching?  I used the inner snowflake design in the kit to cut blue cardstock several times, creating a fun pattern.  When I adhered it on top of some silver glitter cardstock, it made the most beautiful snowy background for my card!  (This design would also work as a doily for non-holiday cards.)

I did cut one snowflake out of white cardstock to stitch though, and used blue and silver metallic embroidery thread for maximum sparkle and shine.  A matching sentiment, foiled onto white cardstock using Cobalt Hot Foil and the Shimmering Merry Christmas Sentiments Foil Plate Set, finished this card off perfectly.

I hope you enjoyed this look at the November 2020 Large Die of the Month kit and thanks so much for stopping by today.  I’ll be back with inspiration for some of the other November club kits very soon!  Are you going to try some stitching on your Christmas cards?
